STEPS
1

Sometimes, the hardest part of achieving a goal or completing a project is simply getting started. Think of something you’ve been meaning to do, but just couldn’t seem to find the motivation — it could be the next step towards meeting a goal you have or a project you’ve been working on.

2

Because we are all motivated in different ways and the nature of the tasks are always a bit different, it’s important to find what works for you. Look through this list of ways to stay focused on a task, and select any that seem like a good fit for you. Feel free to come up with your own way as well!

Collect inspiration — images, videos, songs, stories, quotes, etc. — that make you feel energized and give you ideas to get started.

GET INSPIRED

Do you and a friend share a goal? Set up regular time to work together — you might share ideas, give each other feedback, or celebrate what you’ve accomplished.

ENLIST
A FRIEND

Carve out intentional time in your schedule dedicated to working towards your goal. Make this time a priority and a regular part of your routine.

SCHEDULE IT

Remind yourself of past successes and things you are proud of. Create a motivating mantra that you can repeat to yourself when you are getting discouraged.

BE YOUR OWN
CHEERLEADER

Think about the place where you are most productive. Is it somewhere quiet or noisy? Inside or outside? Find the  environment that works best for you.

LOCATION, LOCATION,
Location

Write down why this is important to you and why you want to accomplish it. Put this purpose statement in a place you will see it everyday.

REMIND
YOURSELF WHY

Give yourself the chance to get focused. For a set period of time, turn off social media notifications, texts, and any other possible distractions.

PUT ON YOUR BLINDERS

Think of something small to treat yourself or have something to look forward to when you’re finished with the task.

REWARD
YOURSELF

Break down your larger goal into smaller milestones. How can you create moments of accomplishment each step of the way?

SHARE IT

3

Think back to the task or goal that you’ve been feeling a bit stuck on. Try one of your chosen ways of motivating yourself to get this done. If this method isn’t working, try a different one until you find one that helps you make progress.

4

Knowing how to motivate yourself is a valuable way to feel more in control of your goals, which helps you build self direction. Reflect on the motivation methods you tried and how it went. Understanding your motivation style is a tool you can use anytime you feel stuck in the future.

HABITS

Give yourself a fresh start

We often make New Year’s resolutions, but the truth is we can make commitments to ourselves on any day of the year. Get motivated by framing today as a fresh start — the day you start something new, stop something that’s not helping you, or change your mindset and priorities.

Visualize your success

Accomplishing your goals will become easier once you know what success looks like for you. Close your eyes and picture yourself achieving your goal. What does it look like? Feel like? What happens as a result? Paint a clear picture that gets you excited to work towards this vision.

Find your headspace

Getting into a productive mindset is one way we can help ourselves feel motivated. Set aside 10 minutes for yourself before diving into a project or something you are working on. Go on a quick walk, take some deep breaths, stretch out your body, or whatever helps you feel ready to go.
