Get familiar with the journey: Before you dive in, it’s helpful to learn a little more about what purpose means and how you can develop it in your life. Each step of this journey provides a tool or practice you can continually use to cultivate purpose.

Understanding
Purpose

Purpose is what sits at the intersection of something you care about, something you choose to develop skills in, and something that contributes to the world around you. Understanding a little more about what purpose means is the first step in developing it!

STEPS
1

What is purpose? It can sound daunting, but it’s not a single destination you need to get to, or a calling you need to find. Purpose is actually something you can build a little bit of every day, in many different areas of your life. It all starts by focusing on three specific areas. Take a look at how these areas overlap — this can often be where you feel the most purposeful.

2

One way to start exploring purpose is through reflection. It’s important to look inward to examine your experiences, strengths, and interests, as well as look to the world around you for inspiration. Watch Liora, Fouad, or Nobel share their stories about how reflection inspired their purpose projects.

ONE THING YOU VALUE RIGHT NOW
What do you value right now? It might be a topic, interest, or cause.

3

You can take action on things that matter to you, through experimentation. Experimentation gives you the space to explore new interests, build new skills, or refine ones you already have. Think about a time that you tried something new; it could be going to a new place, trying a new food, or learning about a new topic. What’s one thing you learned from the experience? (about the topic, yourself, or the world around you!)

4

Lastly, you feel most purposeful when you are connecting with others in the process. One way to form connection is by finding ways to use your skills and strengths to support others. You might be helping out a community, supporting a cause, or making a difference in the life of one person. What’s one way you’ve had a positive impact on others this week?

5

Purpose is when you take something you care about, and something you’re good at (or a skill you are growing), and use them to make a difference in the lives of others. During this journey, you’ll get the chance to reflect on how you spend your time, try new things, and make new discoveries about yourself.

Are you the explorer, the dreamer, the epicure, or the connector? Take our learner quiz to capture a snapshot of where you are on your purpose journey right now, before getting started.

HABITS

Ask others to define purpose

“Purpose” can mean different things to different people. As you start to develop your own definition of purpose, try asking a few people in your life what purpose means to them. Gathering multiple definitions can help you see purpose in a new way or better understand what it means to you.

Gather stories of purpose

Who do you think has cultivated a strong sense of purpose in their life? Whether you know them personally or they are someone you admire, getting familiar with their stories can inspire you. Learn more about what they care about and how they use reflection, experimentation, and connection to foster purpose.

Revisit your purpose

Your purpose isn’t fixed, but constantly changes and grows with you. There might be moments when you don’t feel a strong of a sense of purpose, especially during change. When you experience a moment of transition, feel free to revisit these activities to see how your purpose may have shifted.
